The memorial park for the victims of the Croatian War for Independence in Ilok is arranged as a simple labyrinth made from elementary materials, primarily brick. We recognize brick as the main material in the construction of the Ilok area, and effectively, as a cheap material, it serves a purpose. In addition to brick, we also used concrete in the modeling, both of which are prefabricated elements, for usable equipment, and for flooring. The goal is to make the materials, as well as the finishing touches, as simple and adapted to the environment as possible. Along with them, water and horticulture play a very important role, and also provide a palette of colors to refresh the overall impression.
Just as the walls of Ilok have historically protected Ilok and its surroundings, so have our war defenders, like a brick wall, shielded Croatia 30 years ago. In memory of their dedication, we want to create an eternal wall that will honor and commemorate their contribution to their country. These raised walls create a feeling of security and scale an endless space smaller to adapt it to human intimacy, providing visitors with peace and the possibility of devotion to prayer.
The memorial park was conceived as a focal point of the city of Ilok. Although located on the outskirts of the city, it can be a strong foundation for further urban development. The combination of a memorial park and an urban garden fills the space with life and constant communication of the inhabitants, recalling the people who made our lives possible. With this project we want to create a community of all ages that will learn from each other.
Horticulture in the park is related to the town of Ilok and its history. When designing, we had in mind that there are foundations for the cultivation of medicinal plants, and we placed the same on the site for the benefit of all citizens of Ilok. On the south side of the scope, there is space for the realization of the action - "Plant my tree", which is being held this year in Gunja and Ilok.
